Maharishi: The principle of Transcendental Meditation is simple: Being is bliss in its nature. It is infinite happiness. The mind is always moving in the direction of greater happiness. It is the experience of everyone that wherever the mind goes, it moves in the direction of greater happiness. And because the nature of inner Being is bliss, infinite happiness, during Transcendental Meditation the mind takes that inward course in a most spontaneous manner.
In this meditation we do not concentrate or control the mind. We let the mind follow its natural instinct towards greater happiness, and it goes within and gains bliss consciousness in Being.
Effortless Transcending
The technique is: We take a specific thought which suits us, which is called a mantra or suitable sound for us, which we receive from the trained teacher of Transcendental Meditation. Teachers are found everywhere in the world, and I have trained them properly. They give a suitable word, and the man experiences the thought of that sound minimizing, and then experiences the finer state of that thought, until the source of thought is fathomed, and the conscious mind reaches the transcendental area of Being.
“We let the mind follow its natural instinct towards greater happiness, and it goes within and gains bliss consciousness in Being.” —Maharishi
Bliss Consciousness
So the mind moves from a gross thought, to the subtle state of thought, to the subtlest state of thought—this is the path of Transcendental Meditation—until the conscious mind reaches bliss consciousness, Transcendental Consciousness, or pure consciousness, the state of Being.
Here in the state of Being, the mind becomes soaked with energy, intelligence, and great happiness. With it, it comes out and performs and experiences the world much better than before.
Been meditating almost 45 years now. Since 1975. I simply feel good when I meditate and simply feel less than optimum when I don’t.
Thank you, Bob, that says it all!
I took TM last June. I fell off it recently and last week went for a refesher course and am back. I feel so much better when I meditate twice a day. I’m 86 years old and took so many other courses, too many to list. This is simple and makes my days so relaxed and worthwhile.
I am practicing TM from 2000. Here in Chennai in India. Simple to meditate. Article so good.
I find the practice of TM a wonderful dichotomy. At the end is each session I am totally relaxed yet my soul is totally energized. This relaxed state of energy compels me to seize the day and all that I encounter.
John, you articulate this quite beautifully. Thank you for your comment and insight.
I love tm. I felt calmer right away. I stopped tm for a few months d/t a conflict but I had a group meditation with Irene giangregorio this week and I’m on the beam again. Ty so much kris
Thank you, Kris. Glad all is going well again.
