David Orme-Johnson, Ph.D., talks about the published research on the social effects of group practice of the Transcendental Meditation and advanced TM-Sidhi® programs. He also discusses the implications of this research for developing the full potential of the individual and reducing violence in society.
Dr. Orme-Johnson is one of the world’s leading experts in the scientific study of meditation, having published more than 100 studies on the effects of TM practice on health and human development in scientific journals, including American Psychologist, American Journal of Health Promotion, International Journal of Neuroscience, and Journal of Adult Development. His sociological research on the potential of group TM practice to reduce social violence has been published in more than a dozen journals, including the Journal of Conflict Resolution, a leading international publication in the field.
Dr. Orme-Johnson was an early pioneer in demonstrating the effectiveness of the TM technique in eliminating stress, in his 1973 study in Psychosomatic Medicine. His groundbreaking study on TM and brain functioning showed that the unique, coherent electrical activity in the brain during TM practice was correlated with states of increased creativity and intelligence, enhanced moral reasoning, and decreased neuroticism. He was also the first to research the effects of meditation in prisons, showing that the TM technique increases autonomic stability and cognitive flexibility. He also conducted the first large-scale studies of medical utilization statistics, which found that the TM program reduces diseases across all categories of illness and in all age groups.
Dr. Orme-Johnson has presented his research at hundreds of scientific conferences in more than 50 countries, including four separate presentations to the United Nations.
