Doug Abernathy, retired battalion chief of wellness and support with the Indianapolis Fire Department, discusses his work bringing the TM technique to firefighters through the Deep Rest for the Best program he is developing with his TM teacher, Paul Wilson. Drawing on a 38-year career in the fire service, Mr. Abernathy reflects on how he became a leader in behavioral health and peer support and how his TM practice has supported his sleep, stress management, and spiritual growth while complementing his Christian faith.
Doug Abernathy served the Indianapolis Fire Department for nearly four decades, helping to shape the department’s approach to firefighter health, safety, and well-being. Over his career, he held key leadership roles and played a central part in strengthening peer support programs and advancing a more holistic model of wellness—one that includes mental, emotional, and spiritual resilience.

Known for his compassion and steady presence, Mr. Abernathy supported firefighters and their families through the challenges of the job, with a particular focus on behavioral health. He continues this work as a Peer Support Instructor with the International Association of Fire Fighters, providing training for firefighters, emergency medical services personnel, and dispatchers on building effective support systems and responding to behavioral health needs.
