Retired Rear Admiral Stephen Metruck talks about how 40 years of daily TM practice has helped him grow through the ranks in the military. He also talks about his current position as Executive Director of the Port of Seattle, one of the Pacific Northwest’s leading economic engines.

Mr. Metruck came to the Port of Seattle following a 34-year career with the U.S. Coast Guard, retiring as a Rear Admiral. He has had experience across a diverse range of operations and executive-level assignments on both coasts, as well as the Great Lakes, and the Gulf of Mexico. As the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) for the Coast Guard, he was responsible for all financial management and execution of the Coast Guard’s $10 billion annual appropriation.

As executive director of the Port of Seattle, Mr. Metruck directs 2,200 employees who deliver services to the region, and he leads a countywide special-purpose government responsible for providing world-class trade, travel, and logistics to one of the nation’s most dynamic and fastest growing regions. The Port generates over 216,000 jobs and almost $1 billion in state and local taxes, improving local economic opportunities while safeguarding the environment.

The Port manages operations for Seattle-Tacoma International Airport—one of the busiest passenger airports in the United States—as well as cruise, commercial fishing, grain terminals, recreational marinas, and other real estate activities. The Port also operates one of North America’s largest maritime cargo shipping gateways through the Northwest Seaport Alliance, a joint effort with the Port of Tacoma.
