Amy Ruff, BSN, RN, the National Director of TM for Nurses, discusses a study published in the Journal of Nursing Administration in December 2023. The randomized, controlled study showed that TM practice significantly reduced post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and anxiety by more than half in frontline nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic. She also talks about another study showing that TM significantly reduced “compassion fatigue” and improved resilience for nurses.
Ms. Ruff has been a registered nurse for over 50 years, with a long and rewarding clinical career that includes intensive care, cardiac intensive care, and home care. She has been bringing the evidence-based TM program to nurses across the United States for many years and has earned approval to offer continuing education credit to nurses and other professionals when they take the Transcendental Meditation course.
Ms. Ruff has presented research at many nursing conferences, including the American Holistic Nurses Association, Florida Nurses Association, American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) Magnet Conference, and the Mayo Clinic. The first research on nurses practicing the TM technique was published in 2019. It joined over 400 published studies on the effects of TM in numerous areas of life, including health, psychology, work, and more.
