Pioneering TM researcher David Orme-Johnson, Ph.D., discusses his scientific studies that helped inspire an international TM course for world peace in December 2023, when 10,000 people will practice the TM and TM-Sidhi programs together in Hyderabad, India. Dr. Orme-Johnson talks about the predictable impacts that this course may have on trends in global collective consciousness.

He also introduces the new book he co-authored with Denise Denniston Gerace, Ph.D., The TM and TM-Sidhi Book: Enlightenment, Invincibility, World Peace, which explains how the TM and TM-Sidhi programs, when practiced by sufficient numbers of people, provide a powerful technology to help unfold the full potential of the individual while enlivening peace and harmony in the world.

Dr. Orme-Johnson is one of the world’s leading experts in the scientific study of TM, having published more than 100 studies on the effects of TM practice on health and human development in scientific journals, including American Psychologist, American Journal of Health Promotion, International Journal of Neuroscience, and Journal of Adult Development. His sociological research on the potential of group TM practice to reduce social violence has been published in more than a dozen journals, including the Journal of Conflict Resolution, a leading international publication in the field. He has presented his research at hundreds of scientific conferences in more than 50 countries, including four separate presentations to the United Nations.

Dr. Orme-Johnson was a pioneer in demonstrating the effectiveness of the TM technique in eliminating stress, in his 1973 study in Psychosomatic Medicine. In another groundbreaking study on TM and brain functioning, he showed that the unique, coherent electrical activity in the brain during TM practice was correlated with states of increased creativity and intelligence, enhanced moral reasoning, and decreased neuroticism. He was also the first to research the effects of meditation in prisons, showing that the TM technique increases autonomic stability and cognitive flexibility. In addition, he conducted the first large-scale studies of medical care utilization statistics, which found that the TM technique reduces diseases across all categories of illness and in all age groups.
