Tony Award-nominated Tom Hewitt talks about his career of over 40 years as a stage actor on Broadway and in touring productions around the world. He discusses the intense challenges professional actors face, and the particular benefits that TM practice brings to those who are in constant need of creative energy and stamina—on and off the stage.

Mr. Hewitt has appeared in the Broadway productions of The Lion King, Art, The School for Scandal, The Sisters Rosensweig, The Boys from Syracuse, Jesus Christ Superstar, The Rocky Horror Show, and Amazing Grace, among others.

Over four decades Mr. Hewitt’s work has taken him throughout the world, notably as a company member of Arena Stage in Washington, D.C., and for 12 years with the Suzuki Company of Toga in Japan, the United States, and Europe. He is currently playing the role of Hades in Hadestown on Broadway.

Mr. Hewitt has also played leading roles in national touring Broadway productions of several musicals, including Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, for which he received a Touring Broadway Award; in Peter Pan as Captain Hook/Mr. Darling; and in the national tour of Chicago. His many off-Broadway credits include a New York Shakespeare Festival production of Othello.

Mr. Hewitt is a native of Victor, Montana. After graduating from the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee with the Professional Theatre Training Program’s first class in 1981, he worked with such regional powerhouses as the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis and the Berkshire Theatre Festival in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, before heading to Broadway. He has been practicing the Transcendental Meditation technique since 2012, and his home base is in Putnam Lake, New York.
