David Lynch Foundation CEO Bob Roth and host Mario Orsatti discuss excerpts from an interview with Paul McCartney by filmmaker David Lynch, in which Sir Paul talks about meeting TM Founder Maharishi Mahesh Yogi and learning the TM technique in 1967. Mr. Roth and Mr. Orsatti also reflect on the McCartney family’s extended meeting with Maharishi in 1998.
The co-hosts also play a video of Paul performing at the “Change Begins Within” Benefit Concert for TM in Schools, which took place at Radio City Music Hall in 2009.
Mr. Roth and Mr. Orsatti, Director of Advanced Techniques of the TM program for the United States, presented and discussed Mr. Lynch’s interview with Sir Paul on September 3, 2023.

Sir James Paul McCartney, CH, MBE, is an English songwriter, singer, and musician who gained worldwide fame with The Beatles. One of the most successful composers and performers of all time, Sir Paul is known for his melodic approach to bass-playing, versatile and wide tenor vocal range, and musical eclecticism, exploring genres ranging from pre-rock-and-roll pop to classical, ballads, and electronica. Born in Liverpool, Paul taught himself piano, guitar, and songwriting as a teenager, having been influenced by his father, a jazz musician. His songwriting partnership with John Lennon remains the most successful in history.
Sir Paul has written or co-written a record 32 songs that have topped the Billboard Hot 100. His honors include two inductions into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (as a member of The Beatles in 1988 and as a solo artist in 1999), an Academy Award, a Primetime Emmy Award, 18 Grammy Awards, an appointment as a Member of the Order of the British Empire in 1965, and knighthood in 1997 for services to music. Beyond music, he has been involved in projects to promote international charities, including the David Lynch Foundation for Consciousness-Based EducationSM and World Peace.
David Lynch is an American filmmaker, painter, photographer, musician, sound designer, actor, and philanthropist. He is best known for writing and directing films such as Wild at Heart, Blue Velvet, The Straight Story, and Mulholland Drive, which are often regarded by critics as among the best films of their respective decades. He is among only 21 directors in the history of the Academy Awards who have received a Best Director nomination for their first feature-length film. He has also received awards for his groundbreaking television series Twin Peaks.
Mr. Lynch has twice won France’s César Award for Best Foreign Film, as well as the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, and a Golden Lion award for lifetime achievement at the Venice Film Festival. In 2019 the Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences presented him with the Academy’s Honorary Award. This special award celebrates extraordinary achievements by a leader in motion pictures. Past recipients have included Charlie Chaplin, Cecil B. DeMille, Elia Kazan, Sidney Lumet, Akira Kurosawa, Lina Wertmüller, Jean-Luc Godard, and Federico Fellini.
