Fred Travis, Ph.D., Director of the Center for Brain, Consciousness, and Cognition at Maharishi International University (MIU), discusses recent research and discoveries about the impact of sleep on human brain physiology. He also talks about the importance of the knowledge and techniques of the Maharishi AyurVeda® system of natural health, including our daily TM practice, for “getting rid of brain dirt” and improving the quality and depth of our sleep.

Dr. Travis is one of the world’s leading researchers on the effects of meditation on brain integration, having published 84 scientific papers on the subject. His work has focused on brain development from birth to adulthood; the effects of stress on brain functioning; the effects of meditation on the brain during and after practice; and the brain patterns correlated with peak performance and higher states of consciousness.

Dr. Travis is the co-author of World-Class Brain: The Edge That Helps Peak Performers Succeed and How You Can Develop It and Excellence through Mind-Brain Development: The Secrets of World-Class Performers. He received his Ph.D. at MIU and did his post-doctoral research at the University of California Davis, at the Neurology Sleep Medicine Clinic.
