In a historic video from 1971, a Swiss journalist asks Maharishi Mahesh Yogi about the relationship between the Transcendental Meditation technique and religion. TM Talks host Mario Orsatti and David Lynch Foundation CEO Bob Roth discuss excerpts from this famous interview, in which Maharishi talks about how TM practice helps fulfill the goals of religion.
Maharishi explains that the TM technique is a great friend of all religions because transcending takes the meditator to that universal field of pure consciousness. When experienced regularly through daily TM practice, pure consciousness helps a person to spontaneously live a truly good and successful life in harmony with the laws of nature.
TM Founder Maharishi Mahesh Yogi brought the Transcendental Meditation program from India to the West in 1959. Since then, more than 10 million people of all ages, cultures, and religions have learned the TM technique. In 1963, Maharishi published his seminal book, Science of Being and Art of Living, which was translated into 15 languages. His second book, published in 1967, was Maharishi Mahesh Yogi on the Bhagavad-Gita: A New Translation and Commentary. He wrote many more books and circled the world numerous times, speaking with world leaders and lecturing widely.
Maharishi also inspired a scientific quest for enlightenment. Over 700 published studies on the TM technique have demonstrated its far-reaching benefits—better health and longer life, greater intelligence and creativity, more fulfilling relationships and work success, reduced societal stress, and effortless creation of peace.
