Jim McCullough, a conservationist, farmer, and retired 20-year member of Vermont’s House of Representatives, discusses the importance of conserving and expanding our nation’s public lands to create more enticing ways for Americans to enjoy our environmental beauty. He also talks about his enthusiasm for his practice of the Transcendental Meditation technique.

Mr. McCullough is a life-long Vermont resident. In 1978, he and his wife, Lucy, converted their 500-acre farm into the Catamount Outdoor Family Center, a non-profit recreational center and town-owned forest near Burlington, Vermont. Originally intended for cross-country skiing, over the decades it has evolved into a major center for outdoor enthusiasts, and now includes trails for hiking, mountain biking, and snowshoeing, as well as cross-country skiing. “For the past 40 years, athletes of all ages and abilities have found challenge, camaraderie, and communion with nature at this family-friendly forest,” according to a Trust for Public Land article.

The McCulloughs’ eighteenth-century home is adjacent to the Center, having been occupied by his family for generations. Built in 1796 by Vermont’s first Governor, Thomas Chittenden, it is one of Vermont’s oldest houses, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Mr. McCullough is also a Justice of the Peace for the Town of Williston, just outside of Burlington, Vermont, and a member of the Vermont Natural Resources Council and the Vermont Woodlands Association.
