Lawrence Eyre, the 2009 U.S. Tennis Professionals Association “High School Coach of the Year,” discusses the key role that the TM program played in his successful 30+ years of coaching. He also discusses his experience teaching in a high school where TM practice is part of the daily routine of all students, faculty, and staff.

Mr. Eyre is a native of Moline, Illinois, where he was a high school tennis champion. At Yale University, he varsity-lettered in his freshman year, taught tennis throughout his B.A. and M.A. programs, and never stopped. After putting competitive tennis on hold to pursue singing, he was selected for the Whiffenpoofs, the world’s oldest collegiate a capella group.

Mr. Eyre is a founding faculty member of the independent K–12 Maharishi School in Fairfield, Iowa, where he has taught World History, American Government, and the Science of Creative Intelligence, while coaching the tennis team to 20 Iowa state championships. As mentioned above, the United States Professional Tennis Association, the global leader in tennis-teacher certification and professional development, named Mr. Eyre High School Coach of the Year in 2009.

Mr. Eyre is also a board member and the interim director of the Carnegie Historical Museum in Fairfield, Iowa, on the site of the first Carnegie Library west of the Mississippi River. He is the author of a 3-DVD set on tennis coaching in the High School Coaching Academy series, as well as a book of poetry, Heartland Haiku (2019).

Mario Orsatti, the host of TM Talks and Senior Teacher of the Center for Health and Wellness, a division of the David Lynch Foundation, interviewed Mr. Eyre on July 30, 2023.
