Veteran TM teacher John Cowhig talks about what led him to learn the Transcendental Meditation technique and how he met TM Founder Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. Mr. Cowhig also had the opportunity to join Maharishi’s international staff and become his personal secretary. He shares some lovely and profound conversations and experiences he had with Maharishi over the years.

Mr. Cowhig began his lifelong adventure with TM in Vancouver, Canada, in 1967, after a classic baby boomer trajectory from altar boy to party boy to flower child, then learning the TM technique. In 1970, Maharishi made him a TM teacher at the retreat facility on the banks of the Ganges River in Rishikesh, India.

From 1974 to 1977, Mr. Cowhig served as Maharishi’s personal secretary and worked with him everywhere he went. He then represented Maharishi and the TM organization in countless roles, traveling to over 100 countries over the next 15 years. In the late 1970s, Mr. Cowhig  oversaw the Latin American TM organization and organized the first Latin American TM Teacher Training Course (TTC). He also led TM TTCs worldwide and co-managed KSCI-TV in Los Angeles. Mr. Cowhig contributed to many of Maharishi’s visionary projects, including one to help developing countries become food self-sufficient by cultivating organic food on unused arable land.

Recently, Mr. Cowhig helped to edit and write the glossary for the groundbreaking book Consciousness Is All There Is: How Understanding and Experiencing Consciousness Will Transform Your Life (Hay House, August 2024) by Tony Nader, M.D., Ph.D., M.A.R.R., the MIT- and Harvard-trained neuroscientist and head of the international TM organizations.

Mr. Cowhig lives on Salt Spring Island, British Columbia, in a Maharishi Vastu® home overlooking the ocean and Vancouver, where he was born. In July 2024, he published a book of poetry and an autobiography that includes his 17 years spent with Maharishi.
