For 18 years Ed Malloy was the Mayor of Fairfield, Iowa—one of the most progressive and entrepreneurial small cities in America. He was named one of the “15 Greenest Mayors” in 2009. He discusses his life as a meditating community leader and executive.

Mr. Malloy grew up in Glen Cove, Long Island, New York, and moved to Fairfield in 1980 with his wife Vicki. He is the president of Danaher Oil Company, which he joined in 1984 and became a partner and was appointed president in 1994. He served two terms on the Fairfield City Council before being elected Mayor in 2001, and he was re-elected nine times until he retired in 2019.

Mr. Malloy founded the Fairfield Entrepreneurs Association in 1989, working with start-up companies to achieve their goals of creating jobs. In 2003 Fairfield was named The Most Entrepreneurial City in America (population under 10,000), and he received the Grassroots Leadership Award along with the designation.

Fairfield was also included in Iowa’s GREAT PLACES list in 2006. In 2013, Fairfield was #7 on Smithsonian Magazine’s list of “The 20 Best Small Towns to Visit.” In 2014, BuzzFeed named Fairfield #2 of “11 Coolest Small Cities It’s Time to Road Trip To.”

Mr. Malloy had the vision to help bring about more than a cool town. In 2008, he formed a community-wide committee to write a GREEN plan that included all sectors. The resulting “GO GREEN” Strategic Plan for Fairfield gained national recognition. In 2009, MSN.com named Mayor Malloy one of the “15 Greenest Mayors” in the country, alongside the mayors of New York City, Chicago, and Portland. According to an Iowa environmental news and research website, “In this small southeastern Iowa town, you’ll find, among other green feats: more solar-powered homes and buildings with green features than anywhere else in the state; and a hundred acres of greenhouses powered by wind and solar energy for the year-round production of organic food.”

Mr. Malloy is currently Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Maharishi International University in Fairfield, Iowa.

Mario Orsatti, the host of TM Talks and Senior Teacher of the Center for Health and Wellness, a division of the David Lynch Foundation, interviewed Mr. Malloy on August 14, 2022.
