Acclaimed American opera singer Frederica von Stade talks about the role of versatility, hard work, good luck, and kindness throughout her more than five decades as an international star. She also discusses the role the Transcendental Meditation technique plays in her life.

Ms. von Stade debuted at the Metropolitan Opera in 1970, and over her professional career, she has recorded ​m​ore than 70 albums that include complete operas, arias, symphonic works, solo recitals, and popular crossovers, which have garnered 6 Grammy nominations. She has been described by The New York Times as “one of America’s finest artists and singers.”

Frederica von Stade is celebrated for her brilliant performances all over the world. She is widely regarded as the pre-eminent lyric mezzo-soprano of her generation.​ Among ​h​er honors is the title of Chevalier of France’s Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, which is the country’s highest honor for the arts. She has twice been the winner of the Grand Prix du Disque.

Some of the highlights of her music career include singing at the White House ​four​ times, for four U.S. Presidents​; starring in a gala staged for the 1992 Winter Olympics; and participat​ing in a televised concert led by Leonard Slatkin to mourn those murdered in the terrorist attacks of 9/11.

Known to family, friends, and fans by her nickname “Flicka,” she has been one of the most beloved figures in the world of classical music.
