Anne Walton, a longtime TM Teacher and marine resource management expert, discusses her experiences in ocean conservation and the challenges facing marine ecosystems. She highlights her work in developing marine protected areas, teaching global solutions courses, and engaging in community initiatives focused on sustainability and environmental protection. As co-chair of the Southeast Iowa Sierra Club, she suggests ways communities can help keep our environment clean and raise awareness about climate change and land use. Ms. Walton also describes how her regular TM practice since age 16 has benefited her life and work.

For more than 30 years, Anne Walton has specialized in the management of marine protected areas, both domestically and globally. Starting in the mid-1990s, and for nearly 10 years, Ms. Walton oversaw multi-stakeholder management planning processes for five of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s marine sanctuaries on the west coast of the United States, in Hawaii, and in American Samoa.

Working with 36 countries for over 20 years, she has partnered with international organizations and governments to build the leadership and management capacity of marine resource practitioners. Since her retirement, she continues to consult in this field worldwide.

Ms. Walton holds a master’s degree in marine affairs from the University of Washington and a master’s in education from the University of Kentucky.
