In enlightenment, how can the nervous system maintain the experience of unbounded, non-changing inner Being even as the body is involved in focused activity or immersed in the inertia of deep sleep?
In this presentation, Fred Travis, Ph.D., looks at brain networks during the Transcendental Meditation technique, as well as during sleeping and waking. He examines how these networks can be integrated through TM practice, providing scientific support for TM Founder Maharishi Mahesh Yogi’s statement in his commentary on the Bhagavad Gita: “The gradual and systematic culture of the physical nervous system creates a physiological situation in which the two states of consciousness exist together simultaneously.”
Dr. Travis is one of the world’s most published researchers in the area of meditation and brain functioning. He received his M.A. and Ph.D. in psychology with a specialization in psychophysiology from Maharishi International University (MIU) in 1988, and held a two-year postdoctoral position at the University of California, Davis, exploring brain changes during sleep.
Dr. Travis returned to MIU to direct research at the Center for Brain, Consciousness, and Cognition. Since 1990, he has authored 87 papers that investigated the relation between brain patterns, states of consciousness, and meditation practice.
Dr. Travis was interviewed by Sam Katz, National Director of Communication for Maharishi Foundation USA, Inc. This event was hosted by Maharishi International University for the National Coherence Campaign (more below) on October 11, 2020.
